Scope note before the numbers: I buy equipment. I'm not a physical therapist, and none of this is medical advice. What I can speak to is what things cost after you buy them.

What I'm comparing, and why the Pro Plus is the reference

I run procurement for a small network of recovery and wellness studios — three locations, about 60 devices in rotation, and a budget I've tracked line by line since 2021. I've bought genuine Theraguns. I've also bought knockoffs on purpose, because I got tired of arguing about price with people who'd never tracked a replacement cycle.

So this is the comparison: a genuine Theragun — the Pro Plus, since that's what most of our quotes were written against — versus the knockoff units that surface when you search for one and sort by price. Not the smaller legitimate brands. The ones with the Theragun name on the box and a serial number that doesn't resolve to anything.

Four dimensions, and a verdict on each:

One of those verdicts is closer to a tie than I expected. The rest aren't close at all.

Dimension 1 — Sticker price vs. total cost of ownership

The knockoff wins the first line of the spreadsheet and loses everything after it.

It took me about three years and somewhere north of 40 device purchases to understand that "cheap" and "inexpensive" aren't the same word. Inexpensive means you paid less. Cheap means you'll pay again.

Here's the three-year picture, ten units per side, same studios, same daily usage:

So the "cheaper" option cost roughly 25% more over three years. I ran that three times because I didn't like the answer.

(Should mention: those units weren't all the same model. Two of them were a different clone entirely, and I'm probably blending their failure dates. The overall shape holds, give or take a few hundred dollars.)

What flipped the math wasn't the purchase price. It was the replacement cadence. When I put the two failure logs side by side, the pattern was obvious in a way the totals hadn't been: under daily professional use, the knockoffs averaged about six months before they degraded to the point where staff stopped picking them up. The Pro Plus units ran two and a half to three years in the same rotation.

Reference point on the device itself: Therabody lists the Pro Plus with roughly a 150-minute battery rating and 16mm amplitude, and pricing has sat around $599 — I checked our distributor quote in early 2025 and it hadn't moved much.

Verdict: genuine, and not by a small margin — but only because these devices run eight hours a day. More on that in the last section.

Dimension 2 — Warranty, and who eats a failure

This one is genuinely lopsided.

Therabody's standard limited warranty on the Pro Plus runs one year, which as of the terms I read in early 2025 covers defects but not normal wear on the battery or the housing. Out of warranty, you can still get a unit serviced or buy a refurb directly, which is how we replaced two of ours at roughly $210 each.

A knockoff has no warranty in any practical sense. The listing says "1-year guarantee" and the seller account is gone in four months. Marketplace dispute processes exist, and I've used them, but the ceiling is low and the clock is slow. Nobody can repair a counterfeit either — there's no parts channel, no service network, and no manufacturer that will touch it.

Verdict: genuine, not close. The warranty isn't about the money; it's about whether a failure is a phone call or a write-off.

Dimension 3 — Battery and motor claims

Here's the one where both sides shade the truth.

Advertised battery life is measured in a lab, at a speed setting nobody uses, with no resistance against the motor. Our usage logs put the Pro Plus at closer to 90–110 minutes at the speeds our staff actually ran it on — well under the headline number, though I might be misremembering the exact average since I stopped logging it in 2024.

The knockoffs were worse and less predictable. Some claimed 240 minutes and died at 40. But the pattern isn't unique to massage guns. It's the same reason a water flosser advertises weeks of battery life based on a one-minute daily use assumption, and the same reason a smart bulb that reviewed well ends up dropping off your network until you power-cycle the router. The spec sheet describes a test bench, not your Tuesday.

This gets into battery engineering territory, which isn't my area. What I can tell you from a procurement angle is that the claim is unverifiable and the degradation curve is the only number that matters — and the genuine unit's curve was noticeably flatter. Six months in, the Pro Plus units still felt like the Pro Plus units. The knockoffs didn't.

Verdict: closer to a tie on honesty, genuine wins on consistency. Either way, don't buy on the advertised number.

Dimension 4 — Certification and the cost that never hits an invoice

This is the dimension I can't put a dollar figure on, and it's the one that ends the argument.

Lithium-ion packs in consumer devices get tested against standards like UL 2054 and IEC 62133-2. Genuine devices carry those marks and the certification is traceable. Counterfeit units typically carry a logo printed on the shell and nothing behind it.

Our procurement policy now requires certification documentation on any powered device that comes into physical contact with a client — not a claim on a listing page, the actual certificate.

The upside of buying a knockoff is two or three hundred dollars. The risk is a battery pack failing against someone's neck while they're lying face down on a table. I calculated that trade-off once and never seriously considered it again.

Verdict: genuine, by default. It's not that the genuine device is risk-free. It's that the knockoff risk isn't insurable, and uninsured risk on client-facing equipment is a cost you can't budget for.

What I'd actually do

I've only ever bought for shared, high-utilization, client-facing settings. If your situation looks different, your math probably differs, so here's how I'd split it:

One person, one device, two or three sessions a week. The TCO math genuinely favors the inexpensive option here, because you're not running the battery into the ground and a failure costs you a Sunday, not an appointment. Buy from a seller with a real return window. Just don't buy a counterfeit — that's a different category from a budget brand.

Shared equipment, used daily. Genuine. Not because of the sticker price, but because the replacement cadence and the downtime add up faster than most people assume.

Equipping a team on a fixed budget. Buy fewer genuine units and build a rotation schedule. Ten units that last three years beat forty that last six months, and your staff will stop hoarding the two that still work.

The pattern I keep running into, in this category and everywhere else, is that the cheapest line item is almost never the cheapest budget line.
